Frequently asked questions

What does IP geolocation actually show?

It maps an IP address to an approximate real-world location — country, region and city — along with the internet provider and network (ASN) it belongs to. It's approximate, not exact.

How accurate is it?

Country-level accuracy is usually very reliable. City-level accuracy varies — it can be spot-on, or off by tens of kilometres, depending on how the ISP allocates addresses in that region.

Can I look up a domain name instead of an IP?

Yes — enter a domain like example.com and we'll resolve it to its IP address and geolocate that.

Why can't I geolocate 192.168.1.1 or 127.0.0.1?

Addresses like these are private or reserved for local networks and loopback — they're not routable on the public internet, so there's no public location to look up.

Does this tell me someone's exact address?

No. IP geolocation identifies the approximate area an internet connection is registered to — typically the ISP's regional hub, not a street address or a person's identity.
