JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard format for sending data between apps, APIs and servers. When it arrives as one long unreadable line, or a single misplaced comma breaks your app, a JSON formatter and validator is the fastest fix.

What is JSON?

JSON is a lightweight text format that stores data as key-value pairs and lists. It is human-readable and supported by virtually every programming language.

{
  "name": "Amina",
  "age": 28,
  "skills": ["design", "writing"],
  "active": true
}

How to format JSON

  1. Open the JSON formatter.
  2. Paste your raw JSON.
  3. Click format (beautify) to add indentation and line breaks.
  4. Use minify when you need the smallest size for production.

JSON syntax rules

  • Keys must be strings in double quotes.
  • Strings use double quotes, not single quotes.
  • Values can be strings, numbers, booleans (true/false), null, objects or arrays.
  • Items are separated by commas, with no trailing comma.
  • Comments are not allowed.

Most common JSON errors

Trailing comma

{"a": 1,} is invalid. Remove the comma after the last item.

Single quotes

{'a': 1} is invalid. Use double quotes.

Unquoted keys

{a: 1} works in JavaScript objects but not in JSON.

Missing brackets or braces

Every { needs a } and every [ needs a ]. A formatter makes mismatches easy to spot through indentation.

Unescaped characters

Quotes and backslashes inside strings must be escaped, like \" and \\.

How validation helps

A validator parses the text and reports the line and position of the first error. Fix it, validate again, and repeat until it passes. This saves time compared with hunting through minified data by eye.

Format vs minify

  • Beautify: for reading, debugging and documentation.
  • Minify: for production payloads, reducing bandwidth.

Working with sensitive data

Avoid pasting API keys, passwords or personal data into any online tool unless you trust how it handles input. Replace sensitive values with placeholders when debugging.

Frequently asked questions

Is JSON the same as a JavaScript object?

No. JSON is a stricter text format; JavaScript objects allow unquoted keys, comments and more.

Can JSON hold dates?

Not natively. Dates are usually stored as strings, such as ISO 8601 (2026-10-10T08:00:00Z).
