Why Your Video Looks Worse After "Compressing" It — And How to Fix That
The setting most compressors bury changes everything about the result. Here's what to actually look for.
Video compression has a reputation problem, mostly earned by tools that expose one slider labeled "quality" and nothing else. Drag it, hope for the best, and often end up with a smaller file that looks noticeably worse than expected.
The actual mechanics of video compression involve a few independent variables, and understanding just two of them explains most of what goes wrong: bitrate and resolution.
Bitrate is roughly how much data is allowed per second of video. Lower bitrate means a smaller file, but also means the encoder has to make harder choices about what detail to keep — and it tends to sacrifice detail first in busy, high-motion scenes, which is exactly where you'd notice it as blockiness or smearing.

Resolution is the actual pixel dimensions. A common mistake is compressing a 4K file down aggressively while keeping it at 4K resolution — you end up spending your limited bitrate budget on far more pixels than the bitrate can support well. Often, simply downscaling to 1080p before compressing gives a visually cleaner result at the same file size than keeping 4K and crushing the bitrate instead.
The codec matters too, though it's the one users have the least intuition for. Modern codecs like H.265 can hit the same visual quality as older H.264 at roughly half the file size — but they take longer to encode and aren't universally supported by every old device or platform you might be uploading to.
If you only remember one rule: match your resolution to your actual use case before you touch the bitrate slider. A video destined for a phone screen doesn't need 4K, and compressing it at a lower resolution will almost always beat compressing 4K footage harder.
